Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Heavy wall pressure vessels have an internal thread for use with PTFE bushings as pressure seals. The design allows hand tightening/loosening for easy access into the vessel. O-ring is positioned on the bushing above the thread for improved sealing. Supplied complete with vessel, PTFE bushing & Viton o-ring. Optional Perfluoro o-ring has the chemical resistance & service temperature range similar to Kalrez 4079. Similar to CG-1239, but with the condenser being a combination of a cold coil and Liebig. Water flows into hose connection “A” through the coil and exits the outer jacket through hose connection “B”. Head is excellent for use when distilling medium to high boiling point solvents. Top outer joint is a 10/30 for use with a 2” immersion thermometer. Available with or without Vigreux indentations to further improve efficiency.

The top outer joint on the 14/20 size can be converted to a 10/18 thermometer joint by using a CG-1016-27 bushing adapter. The sidearm is sealed at a height for use with a 1” immersion thermometer. The inner drip tip joint on the condenser and inner joint on the uptake tube are the same size.
